First post + TED video homework thing

Hi.

First random picture is a horribly cropped photo of the "Self introduction exercise" I did in class. It was actually the first time I'm doing such a thing, and I have to admit it was quite fun. Probably because I was filling it out with nonsense. They're actually true things, more or less.

Anyway, this blog is for the Creative Thinking module.

Following this, I will write things of the Tim Brown video in bullet point form while I actually play the video simultaneously. Everything else is after the cut~

TIM BROWN: TALES OF CREATIVITY AND PLAY
  • adults(and students) fearing judgment of peers. fear and embarrassment cause conservative thinking
  • adults lose freedom, get more sensitive than kids
  • security - more free to play and take risks
  • thus, feeling comfortable with people working with/being relaxed is important
  • playfulness is important because helps us feel better, do better...
  • kids are more engaged with open possibilities
  • what is it/what can I do with this
  • that openness is beginning of exploratory play
  • boxes offer unlimited amount of choices as compared to the toys within them (so kids may play with them a lot more)
  • ~variation on themes~ (eg. the drawing circle exercise)
  • testing psychedelic drugs on creativity - came up with many valid solutions. the drugs made them forget the adult behaviors that got in the way of ideas
  • experimentation. not stopping at the first solution
  • construction play is a powerful way to learn
  • "thinking with your hands" - building prototypes - quickly getting the thinking into the real world
  • building prototypes better than just describing
  • for non-physical - roleplay (acting it out)
  • worth taking roleplay seriously instead of just dismissing (get used to the roles)
  • roleplay for experiences (getting a sense)
  • willingness to play
  • [playful exploration, playful building, roleplay]
  • play has rules especially if it's group play
  • able transition in and out of play, different experiences
  • divergence ("play")/ convergence (more serious)
  • can be serious and play
  • need trust to play
  • need trust to be creative
  • exploration(quantity) / building and thinking with hands / acting it out
And a summary of sorts: Adults need trust to play and be creative. That's a link between playfulness and creativity. Because of fearing the opinion of others, our thinking becomes conservative and hampers creativity. And when it comes to playing, there are things like exploration, building and roleplaying. Being open to possibilities is important. Playfulness seems to come naturally when we are children, and somehow all those behaviors change when we become adults. And those adult behaviors get in the way of our ideas.
